What Are Colored Contacts Made Of? Layer by Layer
I used to assume colored contacts were plastic discs with paint on the surface. Then a friend in optometry school showed me what actually goes into a contact lens. The short answer: medical-grade hydrogel, and the color is not painted on top like I assumed.
Here is what colored contact lenses are made of, from the inside out.
The Base: Hydrogel Copolymer
Modern colored contacts use HEMA+NVP, which stands for hydroxyethyl methacrylate plus N-vinyl pyrrolidone. HEMA provides structure and optical clarity. NVP attracts water molecules to keep the lens moist on your eye.
Water content matters. Yilala lenses sit at 38%, the sweet spot between comfort and durability. Below 30% feels dry after a few hours. Above 60% sounds nice but makes the lens flimsy and prone to tearing. This is the same base material used in clear prescription lenses.
How the Color Gets In
Two methods. The cheap way: print pigment onto the surface. Those Halloween contacts use this. Pigment sits on top where it flakes off, irritates your eye, and traps bacteria.
The proper way: sandwich the pigment between two hydrogel layers. At Yilala, the color layer is sealed inside so pigment never contacts your eye or eyelid. The Pigment
Not printer ink. Not fabric dye. Iron oxides and FDA-approved colorants — the same class of pigments used in medical implants and surgical sutures. Chemically inert inside the human body.
The pattern matters too. Natural-looking lenses like our Earl Series use a dot-matrix pattern mimicking real irises — radial lines, flecks, and a limbal ring. Bad lenses print a solid color circle. The difference is immediately obvious side by side.
Why Material Quality Matters
Your cornea has no blood vessels. It gets oxygen directly from the air. Every contact lens reduces oxygen flow slightly. Better materials interfere less.
HEMA+NVP at 38% water content allows enough oxygen for safe daily wear. The FDA classifies colored contacts as Class II medical devices because material quality directly affects eye health. This is why any site not asking for a prescription is a red flag — they are not taking the medical device part seriously.
