How to Prevent Dry Eyes From Air Conditioning at Work

Office air conditioning is one of the most common causes of contact lens dryness that nobody talks about. You start the day comfortable. By 2 PM, your lenses feel like they have shrunk two sizes. The culprit is almost certainly the AC vent above your desk.

Why AC Dries Out Your Lenses

Air conditioning removes humidity from the air. At 40-50% relative humidity, your tear film stays stable and your lenses stay hydrated. At 20-30% humidity — common in heavily air-conditioned offices — your tear film evaporates faster. Your lenses dehydrate in response. A HEMA+NVP hydrogel lens at 38% water content can drop several percentage points in water content over a few hours in dry air.

The worst position is directly under an AC vent. Air moving across your face accelerates evaporation the same way wind dries wet skin faster than still air. If you cannot relocate, angle the vent away from your face or use a small deflector that clips onto the vent.

Three Fixes That Actually Work

Rewetting drops at your desk. Use them proactively at 11 AM and 2 PM, not reactively when your eyes already feel dry. A small desktop humidifier costs about twenty dollars and raises the humidity in your immediate workspace. Drink more water than usual — systemic hydration supports tear production. Coffee and tea count as hydration but caffeine is a mild diuretic, so offset with an extra glass of water.

If you work in an office where you cannot control the AC, these three fixes together solve about 90% of lens dryness complaints. Read more about dry lenses here. Browse lenses at 38% water content.
