Natural Light Is Your Best Tool
Stand facing a window with the light hitting your face directly. Do not stand with the window behind you — backlighting darkens your eyes and makes the lens color nearly invisible. Direct window light illuminates the iris evenly and renders the lens color accurately. Outdoor photos in open shade — standing in the shadow of a building but facing an open, bright area — produce the most flattering results for colored contacts.
Avoid Direct Flash
Camera flash bounces off the hydrogel surface and creates a white reflection dot on your pupil. This is not a lens defect — it is physics. The curved lens surface acts like a mirror for the flash. If you must use flash, angle your face slightly down so the flash reflects off the lower portion of the lens rather than directly back into the lens. Even better: use natural light or a soft ring light positioned slightly above you rather than straight in front.
Focus on One Eye
Portrait mode on most phones focuses on the face as a whole. The tiny details of your iris pattern get lost. Switch to standard photo mode, tap the screen on one of your eyes to focus there, and take the shot. The lens color and iris pattern will be dramatically sharper than a face-focused portrait mode shot.
