Can You Shower in Colored Contacts? Risks and Safety

Can You Shower in Colored Contacts? Better Not

A guy I know showered with his colored contacts every morning for a week because it was faster to keep them in than take them out, clean them, and put them back in. Day five: his eye turned red, then weepy, then painful. An eye infection that cost him a doctor visit, antibiotic drops, and two weeks of glasses.

Do not do this. Here is why.

What Actually Happens When Water Hits a Lens

Tap water contains microorganisms that your eyes can normally handle — your immune system and tear film deal with them. A contact lens sitting on your cornea changes things. The lens traps water against your eye. Bacteria and amoebas that are harmless in a glass of water suddenly have a warm, dark environment to multiply in. They get trapped between the lens and your cornea where your tears cannot wash them away.

The scary one is acanthamoeba. It is a microscopic organism found in tap water, pools, and hot tubs. It causes a corneal infection called acanthamoeba keratitis that is difficult to treat and can cause permanent vision damage. There is no quick fix for it.

What About Showering with Eyes Closed?

You do not keep your eyes completely closed under running water. Reflex blinking opens them the moment water hits your face. And steam gets everywhere — even closed eyelids let moisture seep in around the edges. If you wear colored contacts, the risk is the same. The HEMA+NVP material at 38% water content does not protect against waterborne pathogens. It just ensures the lens stays comfortable on your eye. That comfort means nothing if an infection starts.

4 Water Situations to Avoid

Situation Risk Level Action
Shower (standing water hits your face) High Remove lenses first. 30 seconds to take them out.
Hot tub / Jacuzzi Very high Never wear lenses in hot water. Heat kills nothing.
Swimming pool (chlorinated) High Chlorine does not kill acanthamoeba. Remove lenses.
Ocean / lake / river High More microorganisms than tap water. Do not chance it.

If You Must Wear Lenses Near Water

Use daily disposable lenses. Wear them for the specific activity, then throw them away immediately after. This eliminates the bacteria-harboring overnight storage problem. Our Yilala colored contacts are 6-month disposables designed for daily wear, not single-use. If you know you will be around water, consider switching to dailies for that day.

Keep rewetting drops handy. If water splashes into your eye, apply drops immediately and blink several times. Do not rub your eye, which can grind any organisms into the lens surface.

The One Exception

Rinsing your lens case. You can rinse the case with fresh contact lens solution, shake it out, and air dry. Never use tap water to rinse the case. Ever. Case hygiene is just as important as lens hygiene.

Bottom line: colored contacts look amazing, cost $9.90 per pair, and last 6 months with proper care. But none of that matters if you get a preventable infection. Take them out before water hits your face. It takes 30 seconds.
