How to Choose the Right Colored Contact Lens Color

How to Choose the Right Colored Contact Lens Color

I have stood in front of a display of colored contacts more times than I can count, holding two lenses side by side, trying to imagine what each one will look like on my actual dark brown eyes instead of on the clear plastic model eye in the packaging. The model eye lies. It always does.

Here is a system for choosing colored contact lens colors that works with your real eyes, not a plastic display.

Start With Your Skin Tone, Not the Lens

Warm skin tones have golden, yellow, or olive undertones. If gold jewelry looks better on you than silver, you are warm-toned. Your best lens colors: hazel, warm brown, honey, olive green. Our Olive Series hazel lenses were designed for warm skin.

Cool skin tones have pink, red, or blue undertones. If silver jewelry suits you better, you are cool-toned. Your best colors: grey, blue, violet, cool green. The Berry Series grey and INYX Series purple look stunning on cool skin.

Neutral skin tones: lucky you. Most colors work. Focus on what effect you want.

Consider Your Hair Color

Blonde hair and light eyes look harmonious together. If you have blonde hair and want colored contacts, lighter shades like grey, blue, and light green will look cohesive. Dark hair gives you more contrast to work with, making both light and dark lens colors viable.

Red hair is the exception. Green and hazel lenses look incredible with red hair. The Illusory Series green lenses paired with red hair create the kind of contrast that people notice from across the room.

Match the Occasion

Occasion Best Color Why
Daily work Brown, hazel, subtle grey Professional. Earl Brown.
Date night Grey, green, hazel Enhancing without distracting. Muse Grey.
Cosplay/convention Blue, purple, pink Character accuracy. Nova Blue.
Wedding/formal Hazel, soft grey, warm brown Timeless. Photos look natural for years.
Everyday Grey, brown, hazel Neutral enough to match any outfit.

A Trick for Trying Colors in Your Head

Take a close-up photo of your face in natural light. Use a photo editing app to overlay a circle of the lens color over your iris. It is not perfect, but it gets you closer than staring at a plastic display eye. This is especially helpful for dark-eyed people because the same lens looks dramatically different on dark brown versus light blue irises.

You Can Own More Than One Color

This is the part most people miss. You do not have to pick one. Our 6-month disposables at $9.90 mean you can own a natural brown for work and a bold blue for weekends without breaking the bank. Many of our customers keep two or three colors in rotation.

Whatever color you pick, make sure it comes from an FDA-registered source. Yilala lenses use HEMA+NVP hydrogel at 38% water content with the pigment sealed between layers. Quality does not change with color choice.
