Can You Sleep in Colored Contacts

Can You Sleep in Colored Contacts? Please Don’t.

A friend of mine fell asleep in her colored contacts after a wedding last year. She woke up at 3 AM, eyes burning like someone poured sand in them. She stumbled to the bathroom, pried the lenses out, and woke up the next morning with a bloodshot left eye that took three days to clear up.

She got lucky. Others do not.

What Actually Happens to Your Eye When You Sleep in Contacts

Your corneas need oxygen. During the day, they get it from the air. At night, with your eyelids closed, they rely on blood vessels in the back of the eyelid to deliver oxygen. Place a piece of plastic over the cornea during those hours and you cut off a major oxygen source.

Even the best hydrogel lenses (HEMA+NVP at 38% water content, which is what our Yilala lenses use) are still a barrier. Oxygen permeability drops further when the lens dries out overnight. Your cornea swells. Tiny gaps open between epithelial cells. Bacteria that normally sit harmlessly on the eye surface find those gaps and slip through.

That is how a corneal ulcer starts. And corneal ulcers can leave permanent scars on your vision.

One Night Won’t Hurt, Right?

Statistically, probably not. But “probably” is doing heavy lifting. The risk of microbial keratitis (a cornea infection) increases roughly 6 to 8 times when you sleep in contact lenses versus removing them. For cosmetic lenses with pigment layers, the risk edges slightly higher because the pigment can trap more debris.

The scary part: early symptoms feel like dry eyes. A little redness. Mild discomfort. By the time it hurts enough to see a doctor, the infection could already be serious.

What To Do If You Accidentally Fall Asleep in Them

Do not panic and rip them out dry. That is how you scratch the cornea. Blink a few times to generate tears. Use rewetting drops if you have them. Wait 5 to 10 minutes. Then remove gently. Do not put them back in the same day. Give your eyes at least a full day to recover. Throw the lenses away if they were daily disposables.

If you wake up and your eyes hurt, your vision is blurry, or there is discharge, do not wait. See an eye doctor that day.

Colored Contacts Are Medical Devices

This is the thing most people forget. Those cosplay lenses you bought for your anime convention? They are FDA Class II medical devices. Same category as insulin pumps and infusion sets. They deserve the same level of caution.

At Yilala, every pair of our colored contact lenses is manufactured in FDA-registered facilities with quality-controlled HEMA+NVP material. But even the best-made lens cannot override biology. Your eyes need to breathe.

Take them out before bed. Every single night. No exceptions.
