Can You Wear Colored Contacts After Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery reshapes your cornea. It changes the curvature of the surface your contact lens sits on. If you had Lasik years ago and are considering colored contacts now, here is what your corneal surgeon would want you to know.

Wait at Least Three to Six Months After Surgery

Your cornea continues to heal and stabilize for months after Lasik. The flap created during the procedure — a thin layer of corneal tissue that was lifted and replaced — heals quickly on the surface but the underlying tissue takes longer. Most surgeons recommend waiting a minimum of three months before wearing any contact lenses, and six months is safer.

During this healing period, your cornea is more vulnerable to infection than a cornea that has not undergone surgery. A contact lens creates a barrier over the healing tissue. If bacteria get trapped under that barrier, the infection risk is higher than it would be in an unoperated eye.

Your Base Curve Has Changed

Lasik flattens the central cornea to correct myopia. Your natural base curve before surgery might have been 8.4mm or 8.6mm. After surgery, the curvature is flatter — maybe 8.8mm or 9.0mm. An 8.6mm lens, which fits most unoperated eyes, may fit too tightly on a post-Lasik cornea. A lens that is too steep creates a suction effect that can disrupt the corneal flap.

You need a new contact lens fitting after Lasik. Your old prescription numbers are obsolete — your vision and your corneal shape are both different. An eye doctor measures your new base curve and confirms that contact lens wear is safe before you order anything. Yilala lenses use an 8.6mm base curve. If your post-Lasik cornea is significantly flatter, colored contacts may not fit comfortably without professional fitting.

Plano Lenses Are Not Automatically Safe

Even if you had Lasik and now have 20/20 vision with no prescription needed, you still need a professional fitting for plano colored contacts. The FDA classification applies regardless of whether the lens corrects vision. The fitting is about your corneal shape, not your vision. Skipping it because you do not need vision correction skips the safety check for the shape change that Lasik created.

Bottom Line

Colored contacts after Lasik are possible for many people. They are not possible for everyone. Get a new fitting from your eye doctor before ordering anything. Wait at least six months after surgery. And if your doctor advises against contacts based on your specific corneal shape, listen to them. Browse lenses with standard 8.6mm base curve.
