Colored Contacts for Summer: Hot Weather Survival Tips
Summer and contact lenses are not natural friends. Heat dries lenses faster. Sweat gets everywhere. Air conditioning dehydrates the air, which dehydrates your lenses. Sunscreen migrates into your eyes. It’s a gauntlet.
Here’s how to wear colored contacts through summer without your eyes feeling like sandpaper by 2 PM.
Sunscreen: Apply Carefully
Put your lenses in first. Sunscreen second. This order means your hands are clean when they touch your lenses, and any sunscreen that migrates near your eyes settles on your skin rather than sliding under the lens. Use a stick sunscreen around the eyes, not a spray. Spray sunscreen plus contact lenses is a recipe for foggy, irritated eyes within minutes.
Air Conditioning Is Your Enemy
AC removes moisture from the air, which pulls moisture from your lenses. If you sit near a vent at work, reposition. If you cannot, keep rewetting drops at your desk. Hydrate extra — yes, drinking more water actually helps your tear film.
Pool and Beach Rules
Never wear colored contacts in a pool, ocean, or lake. Waterborne organisms cause corneal infections. Chlorine does not kill acanthamoeba. If you absolutely must have colored eyes at the beach, bring a spare pair of daily disposables for photos, then switch back to glasses for swimming.
Protection That Does Not Melt
Sunglasses. Real ones, with UV protection. Colored contacts do not contain UV blockers unless specifically listed. Your natural eyes need UV protection year-round, especially in summer reflection off water and sand.
