Why Do Colored Contacts Make Your Eyes Feel Tired?

Wearing colored contacts should not make your eyes feel tired. If your eyes feel heavy, strained, or fatigued after a few hours of lens wear, something specific is causing it. Here are the five most common reasons and how to fix each one.

1. The Lenses Are Not Correctly Prescribed

An outdated prescription forces your eye muscles to work harder to focus, which causes the same fatigue you feel after squinting at small print for hours. If your prescription is more than a year old, the numbers may no longer match your eyes. Get a fresh exam. Yilala lenses cover powers from 0.00 to -4.50. If your actual prescription is outside that range, wearing an off-power lens causes constant low-level strain.

2. The Base Curve Is Slightly Off

A lens with a base curve that is even slightly too flat or too steep creates micro-movement with every blink. Your eyelid muscles work harder to keep the lens in place, and that repeated effort registers as eye fatigue by the end of the day. If your lenses feel like they move constantly, your base curve may not match your eye. Yilala uses an 8.6mm BC. Read about base curve here.

3. You Are Staring at Screens All Day

Screen work reduces your blink rate by half, which dries your lenses and strains your eye muscles. The fatigue you attribute to your lenses is often digital eye strain. The 20-20-20 rule helps: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It resets your focusing muscles and gives your lenses a chance to rewet through normal blinking.

4. Your Lenses Are Near the End of Their Life

A 6-month lens in month five has accumulated protein deposits that cleaning cannot fully remove. The lens surface is rougher, the oxygen permeability is lower, and your eyes work harder to stay comfortable. If fatigue started recently and your lenses are approaching the 180-day mark, replace them. Read about lens lifespan here.

5. You Are Dehydrated

Systemic dehydration reduces tear production. If you have not been drinking enough water, your tear film thins and your lenses dry out faster. Drink water throughout the day. The effect on lens comfort is measurable within hours.

If you have corrected all five and your eyes still feel tired after lens wear, see an eye doctor. Persistent eye fatigue can indicate an underlying condition that contact lenses are aggravating. Browse comfortable lenses.
