Multi-Purpose Solution: The One You Want
A good multi-purpose solution does everything: cleans, disinfects, rinses, and stores your lenses. One bottle handles your entire routine. Hydrogen Peroxide Solutions: Effective But Fussy
Hydrogen peroxide systems clean more thoroughly than multi-purpose solutions. They require a special case with a neutralizing disk that turns the peroxide into saline over six hours. If you put the lenses in your eyes before neutralization completes, you will chemically burn your cornea. The burning is painful, memorable, and completely avoidable by following the instructions. For most people, multi-purpose solution is simpler and just as effective.
Saline Solution Alone: Never Enough
Saline solution is for rinsing, not for disinfecting. It is just salt water. It does not kill bacteria. Do not store your lenses in saline overnight. Do not use saline as your primary solution. It is not a substitute for multi-purpose solution.
Check the Expiration Date
Solution expires. An opened bottle lasts about three months. An unopened bottle lasts about two years from manufacture. Using expired solution is like washing your hands with dirt. The preservatives degrade and bacteria grow. Check the date on the bottle and toss it if you cannot remember when you bought it.
