You see both terms on contact lens websites. FDA registered. FDA approved. They sound similar. They mean different things, and the difference matters for your safety.
What “FDA Registered” Means
An FDA-registered contact lens means the manufacturing facility is listed with the FDA and follows the agency’s Quality System Regulation for medical devices. The FDA has inspected the facility, reviewed its manufacturing procedures, and confirmed that the manufacturer follows documented quality control processes. Registration means the FDA knows the facility exists and has verified the manufacturing process. It does not mean the FDA individually inspects every lens before it ships. That is the manufacturer’s responsibility under the quality control procedures that the FDA registration requires them to follow.
What “FDA Approved” Means
FDA approval is a separate process mostly reserved for high-risk medical devices like pacemakers, surgical implants, and certain diagnostic equipment. Contact lenses — including colored contacts — are Class II medical devices. Class II devices typically go through premarket notification (510k clearance), not premarket approval. They are cleared based on substantial equivalence to an existing legally marketed device.
In plain language: a contact lens manufacturer submits data to the FDA showing their lenses are substantially similar to another lens already on the market. The FDA reviews the data and clears the lens for sale. The clearance process is rigorous but it is not the same as “FDA approved” in the way a new drug or surgical implant is approved.

If a colored contact seller uses the phrase “FDA approved,” they are either being inaccurate or marketing with loose terminology. The correct term is FDA registered (for the facility) and FDA cleared (for the device). A seller who uses neither term probably has no FDA involvement at all.
