How to Store Colored Contact Lenses: Complete Care Guide

How to Store Colored Contact Lenses: The Right Way

I used to store my lenses in a case that had not been changed in six months. Looking back, that is disgusting. The case was scratched, the rubber seal was peeling, and I was basically bathing my lenses in a bacteria hotel every night. I got lucky nothing happened.

Here is how to store colored contacts properly — rules I follow now and everyone should.

Use Fresh Solution Every Single Night

Do not top off. Dump out the old solution, rinse the case with fresh solution, fill the wells, and store your lenses. Reusing old solution is the single fastest way to get an eye infection. Bacteria multiply in used solution within hours. By the next morning, your lens has been swimming in what is essentially bacterial soup.

Multi-purpose solution does triple duty: disinfect, rinse, and store. One bottle covers everything. Follow the contact time on the label — usually 4 to 6 hours minimum for proper disinfection.

How to Clean the Case

The case matters as much as the solution. Rinse it with fresh solution after every use. Air dry upside down on a clean tissue. Never dry it with a towel. Never store it wet. Replace the case every three months. A scratched case harbors bacteria in the grooves that no amount of rinsing removes.

While you are at it, keep your backup case in your go-bag. You never know when you will need to remove your lenses unexpectedly.

Long-Term Storage for 6-Month Lenses

Yilala 6-month disposable lenses like our INYX Series last for 180 days from the moment you open the blister pack. That does not mean 180 wears. It means 180 calendar days in a properly maintained case with fresh solution every night.

If you skip wearing lenses for a week, replace the solution every 3-4 days anyway. Stagnant solution degrades and bacteria grow. Your lenses will survive unused in fresh solution, but they will not survive in old solution.

Common Storage Mistakes

Mistake Why It Is Dangerous
Storing in saline solution Saline does not disinfect. Bacteria grow freely.
Using tap water to rinse case Tap water contains acanthamoeba. Can cause corneal ulcers.
Storing case in the bathroom High humidity grows mold. Keep it in a bedroom drawer.
Mixing lenses in wrong wells Left and right prescriptions get confused. Also cross-contamination.
Keeping blister pack after opening The sterile seal is broken. The lens starts aging immediately.

Travel Storage Tips

Take a small bottle of solution, not a travel-sized bottle that you refill from a big bottle — refilled bottles are not sterile. Bring a backup case. If you fly, keep your lenses in your carry-on. Checked baggage goes through temperature changes that degrade the material.

Proper lens storage extends lens life, protects your eyes, and saves you money. A $9.90 pair of Yilala Berry Series lenses should last 6 months with good habits. Bad habits and you will be replacing them in 3 months.
